West Bloomfield Shooting Today: Police Responding to Active Shooter at Temple Israel, Michigan

A violent incident at Temple Israel, a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, northwest of Detroit, left the suspect dead and prompted a large multi‑agency response on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Authorities confirmed that law enforcement and emergency responders descended on the site after a vehicle was driven into the building and shots were reported, triggering an active threat response and widespread shelter‑in‑place warnings across the surrounding community.

According to officials, a 41‑year‑old man, identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, deliberately drove a vehicle into the synagogue, breaching the structure and causing a fire. The truck, which reportedly contained what appeared to be explosive materials, ignited after entering the building, leading to thick smoke that filled parts of the interior. Investigators found mortar‑type explosives in the vehicle, underscoring the dangerous nature of the attack.

Responding security personnel engaged the suspect, and shots were fired inside the synagogue’s hallways. The suspect was found deceased inside the vehicle, though authorities have not publicly confirmed whether his death resulted from the gunfire exchange with security, self‑inflicted actions, or another cause.

Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, there were no reported fatalities among civilians. One synagogue security guard was injured when struck by the vehicle but was treated and is expected to recover. Emergency responders, including local law enforcement and fire crews, also faced dangerous conditions: dozens of officers were treated for smoke inhalation as they worked to secure the scene and evacuate the building.

Temple Israel, which houses a large congregation and an early childhood center, saw all students, teachers, and staff safely evacuated and accounted for. Many were in the building at the time of the attack, and officials emphasized that their immediate evacuation and crisis procedures helped protect lives.

Local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), are supporting the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not released a motive but are exploring all aspects of the individual’s background, actions, and potential intentions as part of a broader inquiry into the attack.

Political and community leaders have condemned the incident, calling for unity and heightened safety measures at places of worship nationwide in the wake of rising concerns over targeted violence. Residents were urged to rely on official updates from law enforcement and trusted news sources as more details emerge.
