Darnell Wilson Shooting Traverse City Death and Obituary
Traverse City Man Dies in Officer-Involved Shooting During Domestic Violence Response
Traverse City, Mich. — Darnell Wilson, 50, died on March 13, 2026, after being shot by police while responding to a reported domestic violence incident. Authorities say officers were dispatched to a residence on the 400 block of Munson Place in Grand Traverse County around 4:45 p.m. following reports that Wilson had allegedly stabbed a woman.
According to police, responding officers encountered Wilson lying on the floor. When officers announced their presence, he stood holding a knife and advanced toward them. Officers issued repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon and attempted to use a Taser, which proved ineffective. As Wilson continued to approach while armed, officers discharged their firearms, striking him.
Emergency responders immediately began life-saving measures, and the alleged assault victim, a 58-year-old woman, was transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Wilson succumbed to his injuries. No officers were reported injured.
As standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, all responding Traverse City officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Michigan State Police has been asked to conduct an independent investigation. Investigators from the agency’s Special Investigation Section and Crime Lab are reviewing the circumstances, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.
Community members have shared memories of Wilson, recalling him as a familiar and friendly presence in Traverse City. Officials emphasize that the investigation is ongoing and ask the public to respect the privacy of both Wilson’s family and the responding officers as details continue to unfold.
