WESTERN IRAQ KC‑135 CRASH KILLS SIX U.S. SERVICE MEMBERS INCLUDING OHIO GUARD MEMBER

A U.S. Air Force KC-135 refueling tanker crashed Thursday during a mission over western Iraq, killing all six airmen on board and sending shockwaves through the families and communities they leave behind.

Military officials said the aircraft was supporting Operation Epic Fury, a U.S. campaign tied to rising tensions with Iran, when it went down in friendly airspace. Authorities confirmed the crash was not the result of hostile or friendly fire. A second tanker flying in formation declared an emergency but was able to land safely.

Among those killed was Tyler Simmons, 28, a technical sergeant and boom operator with the Ohio Air National Guard’s 121st Air Refueling Wing based at Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base in Columbus. Friends and family remembered Simmons for his upbeat personality and commitment to serving others. Shortly before the flight, he spoke with his mother, assuring her he was doing well despite the challenges of deployment.

Mike DeWine, governor of Ohio, confirmed that three of the six airmen killed were assigned to Ohio-based units, amplifying the tragedy’s impact across the state. Former classmates, coaches, and community members described Simmons as a natural leader and a positive influence during his school years.

The March 12 mission involved two Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft performing aerial refueling operations. During the mission, one tanker suffered a catastrophic failure or possible midair collision and crashed, while the accompanying aircraft sustained damage but managed to reach a safe landing. The incident is under investigation by United States Central Command.

Military officials have not yet released the names of the other five airmen, pending notification of their families.

The crash represents one of several U.S. military losses since the conflict escalated in late February. As the nation mourns, tributes continue to pour in from across the country.

For Simmons’ family and friends, the focus now is remembering a young man defined by his dedication, leadership, and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
