It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Matthew Joseph Devine, a beloved husband, father, son, and brother, who peacefully passed away at home on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. Matt was 65 years old, born on February 3, 1961, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Edward and Joan Devine, who predeceased him. While Matt spent most of his life in Greenville, South Carolina, he touched the lives of many in his community and beyond, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and generosity.

A devoted husband to his wife Heather, Matt shared 25 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. He was a man of strong Christian faith, and his deep belief in serving the Lord was evident throughout his life. Matt cared deeply that his children grew up with a strong, personal relationship with Christ. He served faithfully on the vestry and as an usher at church, where he found joy in greeting members each Sunday. His family fondly remembers Matt’s habit of slipping out of church right after communion, a trait that became a beloved tradition.

Matt was known for his positivity, grace, and kindness. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. It was not unusual to walk into a room and hear someone call out his name, a testament to the many friendships he cultivated over the years. His ability to forgive and his unwavering belief that everyone deserved kindness and grace, regardless of their position in life, were qualities that made him a true friend and role model to all who knew him.

As a proud father, Matt found immense joy in raising his children, lovingly referring to them as “DK5.” His Saturday routine was a cherished family tradition, which often included a trip to the dump, picking up the dry cleaning, and bringing breakfast home for his loved ones. And if he decided to cook, you could be sure that chocolate chip pancakes and scrapple would be on the menu.

Family meant everything to Matt, and he particularly treasured Thanksgiving, his favorite holiday. He lived by the mantra “the more the merrier,” and loved hosting family gatherings, often surprising Heather by inviting a few extra guests to join in the celebrations. Matt’s home was always a place of warmth, laughter, and love, and his absence will be felt deeply by all who were fortunate enough to be part of his life.

Matt is survived by his loving wife Heather, their children, and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. His legacy of love, faith, and kindness will continue to inspire those who knew him.
