Paombong, Bulacan – The community of Paombong is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 75-year-old Josephine Pineda, a dedicated church choir member, who tragically died after returning to her burning home to save church funds during a devastating fire. Josephine’s selfless act of bravery, attempting to protect funds collected for her church, ultimately cost her life.

Josephine Pineda, a beloved member of the Marian Choir at the Parish of Santiago Apostol, had already safely evacuated her home when disaster struck on March 10, 2026. A fire broke out at a family compound in Paombong’s Poblacion region just after 10 a.m., rapidly spreading and consuming four homes, most of which were made of light materials. Despite the efforts of local firefighters, the blaze continued for over thirty minutes before it was finally brought under control.

As the fire raged, Josephine, who had initially escaped safely, returned to her home in a desperate attempt to recover the church collection funds she had been entrusted to protect. Her actions were fueled by a deep sense of responsibility and devotion to her faith. Tragically, Josephine never emerged from the house. Family members believe she may have been overcome by smoke or injured by falling debris during her attempt to retrieve the money.

Josephine’s niece, Cristina Bagtas, shared the heartbreaking details, recalling that a 19-year-old cousin who was accompanying Josephine tried to prevent her from re-entering the house, warning her of the dangers. Despite her cousin’s pleas, Josephine rushed back inside to secure the funds, leaving the young cousin behind, unable to follow as the fire intensified.

Her selflessness and commitment to her church and community will forever be remembered. Josephine Pineda was not only a devoted church choir member but also a kind-hearted individual whose life was marked by her unwavering faith, compassion, and love for those around her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community that she served with such dedication.

As Paombong mourns the loss of a cherished resident, Josephine’s family asks for privacy during this difficult time. A memorial service will be held to honor her life, her contributions to the church, and the love she shared with all who knew her.

Josephine Pineda’s tragic death is a reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by individuals who put others before themselves, even in the face of grave danger. Her legacy of devotion, kindness, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
